HONEY FINGERS

One of the great things about urban beekeeping is the people you meet. My first urban hive was (and remains) hosted on the roof of a renowned pair of share-houses on Faraday Street in Carlton, Melbourne. A lot of people have come and gone, but the bees remain. In fact, I think there's only one person who has now lived there longer than the bees (and maybe 15-plus folk have breezed through, on the way to the rest of their lives).

One of the tenants I met there was James Spinks - writer, MS Painter, animator. He was really relaxed around the bees. I'd climb up on the roof and, once he got a whiff of the fragrant pine needles smouldering away in my bee smoker, he'd jump up for a chat – often with breakfast in hand. Occasionally I'd cut out a chunk of fresh comb for him to add to his toast or whatever. James moved to the Big Apple a while ago, but every now and then something like this pops up in my inbox and makes my day.

Check out James' website for more MSpaint animations, paintings and videos at cloglot.com. His portrait of Myaran Sukumaran (17 April 1981 – 29 April 2015), for Vice Magazine, is particularly poignant. But my personal favourite is the short he did for Boats Music.

I lie. This painting is my favourite. Good times. Thanks Spinx.
